The optional 272 cubic-inch V8 had overhead valves, five main bearings, and produced 162 horsepower at 4,400 RPM. The Ford six-cylinder engine for 1955 was an overhead-valve, 223 cubic-inch unit with a cast-iron block, four main bearings, a Holley single-barrel carburetor, and delivering 120 horsepower at 4,000 RPM. The Country Squire was initially built as a full 'woodie' and in 1955 was based on the Fairlane. It served as the premium station wagon model in Ford's full-size car range throughout this period. The full-size Country Squire station wagon was built by the Ford Motor Company from 1905 until 1991, encompassing seven model generations over forty plus years. The most popular was the 8-passenger Country wagon, with 53,209 units sold. The Station Wagon was a very popular vehicle, with 209,459 examples sold. The top trim level was the Country Squire, with 4-doors and seating for up to 8-passengers. The Country wagon was the intermediate level and offered seating for six- and 8-passengers. A V8 could be fitted for an additional $100. The base trim level was the two-door Ranch Wagon selling for just over $2,040. A six-cylinder model was standard with V8's available as optional equipment. This was a very diverse lineup and was available as a 2- or 4-door wagon with seating for 6- or 8 passengers.
